Conflict Resolution Court

 

The Mission
 
 
The public defender of the juvenile court system has noticed a rise in criminal assaults among teenagers.  He is requesting help in developing some strategies and alternatives to reduce the spread of violence within the Chicago Public School system.  The mission of the project is to advocate, educate, and provide support services for the achievement of teenage safety within the community at large.

The Process

The first mission is to identify and research the different types of violence individuals may encounter in society and the possible penalties they may face.
The second mission is to create a violent scenario with multiple outcomes for each form of violence that you have identified in mission one.  
The third mission is to create a policy and procedure deposition against violence. 
The final mission is to develop a video/photo production that will support your research.  

Performance Task

Access

Investigate/research internet sites, books, magazines, and newspapers to find the different forms of violence. (Inspiration)  
Explore the different penalties/consequences for each violent act.
 Interview law enforcement officials.  

Interpret

Apply the knowledge gained through research.  
Analyze the crimes committed.  
Categorize the severity of the crimes. (Excel)  

        

Produce 

Construct an Inspiration web of the different forms of violence.  
Develop a statistical database that includes the types, frequency, and age groups of the crimes committed. (Excel)  
Formulate and list the possible forms of punishments/consequences for each crime.  
 Develop a pre/post survey of different views of crime and punishment.

Communicate

Create a televised broadcast of the policies and procedures to support your position surrounding violence.  
Debate the issues.  

     

Evaluate

Critique the quality of your project.
 Evaluate the pre/post survey.
Weigh the results.

    

Job Descriptions

Researchers-are responsible for gathering data that will be used by the attorneys.  

Photographer-is responsible for photographing/filming the event in the courtroom.

Public Defender-is responsible for providing legal services for the accused.

Judge-is responsibility for keeping order in the court room and assessing each lawyer's presentation and team effort.

Prosecutor-is responsible for prosecuting offenders.

Court Reporter (Audio)-is responsible for tape recording courtroom procedures.

Recorder (Video)-is responsible for video taping the courtroom procedures.

Bailiff-A bailiff is present during every civil and criminal court proceeding and is responsible for the orderly conduct of court sittings.  The bailiff's most important duty is to tend to the needs of the jury. He or she must take an oath promising to do this.  Other duties include swearing in jurors and witnesses and formally opening and closing the court.  Bailiffs also perform other duties outside the court. These include serving writs and executing warrants.

Juror-is responsible for deciding the truth, or otherwise, of evidence. Therefore, juries must be impartial.  The verdict is the jury's decision about whether the accused is guilty or not guilty. Jurors cannot discuss the case with anyone other than fellow members of the jury because the deliberations are confidential. 

Reporter(s)-is responsible for recording the testimony during the trial and delivering the information to the public.
