Task:

NLCP is planning to indoctrinate African American women into the Lawndale Hall of Fame.  Our students of Howland School of the Arts have been given the task of selecting the women for this honor to be bestowed upon. Students may present their information in the form of an interview, research paper, pictorial time line, or newspaper article.

Students selected to represent the chosen women will be asked to make and carry a banner in honor of the woman of which they have reported.

Project Goals:

Essential Question:

"Is formal education the only way to become

                 renowned?"

  Specific Questions:

How do people become famous?

Do African Americans become famous in the same way?

Is education essential to becoming famous?

Who are some of the distinguished African Americans?

 Specific or grade level questions.

How do you classify important people?

Do you have any renowned or distinguished family members?

Can you gather enough information to make a family tree?

The Process:  Week 1:       The class will be arranged in groups of three or four depending upon class size.  Groups will brain storm on the importance of education. Each group will list at least five goals of an exemplary education. Students will be given a list of unfamiliar prominent African Americans females both past and present.

Week 2: From the list each group will select one person to research. In researching, the students will describe educational backgrounds, the accomplishments, the contributions to the African American society and why the group chose that particular person. Read and select two questions to answer in  Cyberhunt

Week 3:  Each group will research information pertaining to the selected person from provided sites and other resources (books, magazines, etc.).  After gathering information, relevant information will be discussed.

Week 4:  Each group will decide what format will be used to present information. Each group will determine project roles necessary for completion of project. (group leader, recorder, illustrator, editor, typist)

Week 5:  Continue to compile material for final product.

Week 6:  Submit final project.
