Where Does Our Food Come From? - Teacher Page

Project Description

All people need food to survive.  In the past, people spent much of their time obtaining and preparing food.  In our society, food for most people is easily obtained and has become removed from its sources.  This quest will help children understand where the food they eat comes from and the complicated process that brings food to their table.

Groups of children will trace the origin of a specific food item from a balanced meal.  Children will trace a fruit back to the orchard, meat back to the animal farm, milk back to a dairy farm, a vegetable to a farm, and bread back to wheat.  Children will discover the many ways food are produced and processed in our country.

Each group will follow their food item  back to the original source.  Groups will write a sequential description of their food from source to their plate including illustrations of the process or stages of development.

Performance Tasks

The United States Department of Agriculture has chosen our class to help them create a new program to teach children where food comes from.

The USDA has chosen a meal that a typical child might eat and they want you to find a way to tell other children where the food came from and how it was turned into the food we eat.

You will be working in a group with other children to find out about one of the parts of this meal.  You will create a book telling other children where your food comes from.
