Which Cinderella?

The Mission

Dear Children (K-3),

Many of you have heard my fairy tales told one way.  You heard these tales from your teachers, parents and other relatives.  But, did you know that each culture has its own version of my fairy tales and other fairy tales?  For instance, in one culture Cinderella may be African American while in another culture she may be Hispanic.

You are going to listen to different versions of the same stories and see how they mirror the different people and their cultures.  After listening to the stories, I want you and three of your classmates to write your own version of a fairy tales that relates to your own culture.  When you are finished, you will share them with other classrooms in your school and in a school in a different neighborhood that has a different culture.

                                                           Your story-telling friend,

                                                             Mother Goose

The Process

1.     You will be assigned to a group of four.

2.     You will read or listen to one fairy tale from two different cultures.

3.     Each of you will choose a role within the group to better interpret the story:

·        Story Teller – retells the fairy tales.

·        Discussion Leader – asks questions about the fairy tales.

·        Literary Luminator – talks about the cultural features of the fairy tales.

·        Illustrator – draws pictures of the cultural features of the two fairy tales.

4.     Each group will share their fairy tale roles with the class.

5.     Each group will create their own fairy tale.

·        Step 1:  Using Inspiration, brainstorm ideas of what your fairy tale will be about. Create graphic organizers.

·        Step 2 – Begin writing or illustrating your fairy tale.

K-1:  Draw pictures to illustrate your fairy tale.

2-3:  Write a rough draft of the fairy tale.

·        Step 3 – Revise your fairy tale.

K-1:  Students will write captions for their illustrations with assistance from teacher.

2-3:  Revise and edit your fairy tale.  You are required to illustrate your fairy tale and                                                 the cover.

·        Step 4 – Publish on our Web Quest.

·      Step 5 - Share your fairy tale with an audience.
