Are You Afraid of the Big Bad Wolf?

Project Description

 

A review of children’s literature indicates that the wolf is usually depicted as the evil character.  Why?  Are wolves really evil?  

In this unit, the students will become familiar with fictional stories that have a wolf as a character.  Working in groups, students will research wolves to discover their traits.  Students will compare and contrast wolves found in literature to wolves found in their natural habitats.  Students will determine whether wolves are portrayed fairly and accurately in literature.

Is the big bad wolf really big and bad?

How are wolves portrayed in children’s literature?

What are the natural traits of a wolf?

Have authors treated wolves fairly?

Unit Prerequisites

 

·        Basic Computer skills

·        Experience with Inspiration

·        Knowledge of web pages

                        ·        Ability to work in cooperative groups

 

 

Performance Tasks

 

Access:

 

·        Read one of the following stories and report to the class about your findings: The Three Little Pigs and the Big Bad Wolf, Little Red Riding Hood, Peter and the Wolf, The True Story of The Three Little Pigs by A. Wolf, The Fourth Little Pig, and The Three Little Wolves and the Big Bad Pig

·        Examine how the wolves are portrayed in the stories

·        Search websites to determine what wolves are really like in their natural habitats

 

Interpret:

·        Combine information gathered from web sites

·        Compare the traits of the wolf in the stories to the traits of the wolf in nature

 

Produce:

·        Complete a character map

·        Create a story with the wolf portrayed as a good guy

·        Construct a Power Point presentation of your new story

 

Communicate:

·        Discuss your findings in your group

·        Communicate your findings about the character of the real wolf

·        Share your presentation

 

Evaluate:

·        Check your own work and work of others using a rubric

·        Improve your story and explain why
