Webquest for Arthur

The Mission

“And I say ‘Hey, what a wonderful kind of day!  We can learn to work and play and get along with each other!’”  Do you know where this song is from?  You can hear this on Marc Brown’s wonderful series…Arthur!

For those of you who watch the program, Marc Brown highlights a class in between each series.  Wouldn’t you like to be one of those classrooms?  Let’s read his books about neighborhoods and families . We can try to get his attention so he will choose us.  We’re going to go on some field trips and you will be asked to write about them.  The better we write, the better our chances are to be selected.  So let’s hear it for “Lights, Camera and Action!”

The Process

Watch a tape about Arthur going on a field trip.

Participate in an oral discussion about Arthur’s fieldtrip.

Discuss field trips that we will be going on during the year.

Use the KWL strategy to tell what you know about places we are going to visit.  Use the internet to look up information on the places we are going to visit.

Scaffolding Lessons

After our visit to the different places, you will do the following things.

1.     Draw three pictures of something you saw at each place.

2.     Partner up with a Buddy Reader and have them write sentences that tell about your picture.

3.     Make a class book about our field trips.

4.     Look at all of the books to decide which one we would like to send in to channel 11.

5.     Collaborate with your teacher about the letter that we want to send to Marc Brown.
Use Kidspiration or Excel to graph the results.

6.     Write the letter with the whole class in the form of a newscast report.

7.     Decide how we will practice reading/reciting it for Marc Brown.
