Sci-Fi Reading

Project Description:

The scientific method is a unique system.  It gives researchers an opportunity to examine experimentations logically and to view situations at an array of angles. This same tool can also be utilized in life because some people have difficulties making life decisions, for instance, balancing checkbooks, purchasing a car, or deflating life situations.

In this project, the scientific method will be implemented and integrated in the content areas of math, language arts, art, social science, and character education. Students will see what effect the scientific method has on their lives as reason using a logical format to solve real life issues.  This creative process is designed to investigate situations using higher order thinking skills. It will allow students to gain further insight into their challenges while giving students a chance for exploration to comprehend and solve life issues.

Project Goals:

Essential Question:

How does the scientific method relate to life?

Specific Questions

What steps of the scientific method are important to life?

Compare and contrast life experiences that you have observed

What life experiences can you test?

Why are life experiences important?

How would you change the conclusion of one experiment?

How could a life experience be transformed into a science experiment?

Performance Actions:

Access:

Reflect about past experiences.

Gather information life experiences from around the world.

Review vocabulary words.

Read aloud passages to comprehend meaning.

Listen to examples and analogies of the scientific method.

 Interpret:

Infer meaning from text for understanding.

Compare and contrast the characteristics of the main characters using the scientific method.

Analyze the problem of the main characters.

Resolve the issues of main characters using the scientific method.

Produce:

Construct and develop a science experiment using artifacts from the story.

Write a fable about the artifacts used in the science experiment.

Depict how (science) fables relate with life experiences.

Invent a media guide for character education.

 Communicate:

Portray main characters and their characteristics.

Communicate to the audience the problems that the characters are having.

Express to the audience how problems were solved. Using the following mediums: play, pictures, computer interaction.

Evaluate:

Evaluate main characters characteristics and improve their judgment or reasoning

Test (hypothesis)/artifacts to produce a science experiment

Critique life experiences to generate new outcomes.

Performance Tasks:

Last year the CEO of the Chicago Public Schools, Arnie Duncan, created The New Reading Initiative. The program is designed to strengthen your reading skills and increase reading scores. The program has four reading components, which consist of reading fluency, comprehension, writing, and word knowledge.

This year, Arnie Duncan added the scientific method as another component to the New Reading Initiative.  He chose our school to pilot his new idea. In addition he gave us a list of books, which our teachers will guide us to use the seven steps of the scientific method to investigate the problem of the characters. You and your teachers will also use artifacts within the text to conduct a science experiment.

Arnie Duncan also wants us to help him create a character education media guide. For each conflict that a character/s faces, you will identify and write the problem, using the following character education traits to create a new solution. The character traits are: honesty, compassion, justice, courage, generosity, perseverance, self-discipline, responsibility, caring, and respect.  Also, you will use your imagination to develop your own medium.
