Project Description

Students often ask why they have to study the past.  This project will assist them in making that crucial connection between the past and present.

The Egyptian pyramids were the tallest structures in the world until the construction of the Eiffel Tower.  The bricks of Great Wall of China could circle the world at the  equator with a wall standing 8 feet high.  The ancient cultures produced amazing feats.  This project explores how the modern world may have been influenced by these past accomplishments.

Students will explore how ancient civilizations have impacted modern culture.  They will accomplish this task by collecting and analyzing research on one of the following cultures: Ancient Egypt, Ancient Greece, Mesopotamia, China, Ancient Rome and the Aztec civilization.  Finally, the students will create a “mini exhibit” to explain the connections they uncovered through their investigation.

Project Goals

Essential Question:

How have ancient civilizations made an impact on modern civilization?

Specific Questions:

·       What can we learn from exploring past civilizations?

·        Is there a connection between the past and the present?

·        How have the actions of past individuals impacted our lives?

·       Would it impact us today if these cultures never existed?

Produce:

·        Build a “mini exhibit” depicting the five key areas of research showing the link to modern civilization.

·        Create a written label that explains the connection between the past and present.

Communicate:

·        Explain the exhibit components by giving a museum tour to the whole group.
