Bullying

Project Description

Violence is a problem throughout society and as seen at Montefiore, it is a growing problem among the youth of today.  More specifically, bullying has become a serious problem both in and out of the classroom.  This project is directed at showing students that through developing mentoring relationships with others, violence can be positively directed and a positive situation can be created out of a negative one.  Students will write and produce a play illustrating how the relationships that have evolved have stopped violent reactions. The student’s play will be videotaped.

Performance Actions

Task:

You have been selected by Miss Collins’ professor at Indiana University to help him teach his class about violence in schools, specifically bullying.  Mr. Whedon is particularly interested in how forming relationships helps young people change their behavior from the negative to the positive.

He has 20 students in his class who are currently trying to come up with lessons that they can use in their classrooms when they become teachers.

Mr. Whedon wants you to create a presentation for the teachers.  He wants you to write a short play that shows how forming relationships helps to change behavior. The play will be videotaped and sent to Mr. Whedon as your help with his project.

The professor is very excited to see the work that you have created and has sent a letter to you that outlines the information that he is requesting.

Access:

·        Explore information about relationships.

·        Survey the students from ours and other classes about relationships.

·        Interview teachers about students and what relationships the teachers may see that the students need to develop.

 Interpret:

·        Organize the information from the surveys and interviews.

·        Contrast what the students surveys said with the teachers interviews.

·        Determine what relationships the students appear to be missing.

 Produce:

·        Generate a graph showing the results of what the surveys and interviews said.

·        Determine your audience for the presentation that you will create.

·        Develop a short play that gives the reasons for violent behavior and how forming relationships can help stop that behavior.

 Communicate:

·        Discuss your project with the other students in the class.

·        Explain to them your reasoning for the different parts of your project and why you selected to put them in your project.

·        Share your final projects with Mr. Whedon and his class via videotape.

 Evaluate:

·        Critique the projects created in our class by using the peer assessment-grading sheet.

·        Improve any part of your project that you feel does not meet your expectations.

·        Judge whether or not this project has helped you with creating better relationships both within and outside of your class.
