Black Inventors
 
Project Description
 
Students are going to explore and investigate the contributions Black inventors made to the quality of life in the United States. Throughout the year, the students will work in cooperative groups, learning about Black inventors. Each month students will be a part of a different cooperative group. That cooperative group will be responsible for analyzing two inventions by Black inventors. They will use materials and resources available during that time period to recreate the inventions. Students will create a mini-series on Afro-American inventors for a culminating activity.

 How did Black inventors change the quality of life in the United States? What problems did they encounter?

 

Specific Questions:
  • Who were the inventors? What did they invent?
  • How did their inventions change our lives?
  • What economics factors affected inventions?

  • Students will have an understanding of what an invention is
  • Students will have basic knowledge of research, such as how to find and report on information from various sources
  • Students will have pictures or models of what was invented
  • Students will have a description of the inventions
  • Students will explain why the inventions were important
  • Students will have a typed script of the program
  • Students will have any props for the program
  • Students will have biographies of African-American inventors
