How Violence in the Classroom Impacts Learning

The Mission

This program is designed to teach teachers and students how to deal with  violent behavior that occurs in the classroom. Your parents, teachers, civil servants and city officials have formed a task force to address concerns about violent acts that occur in the classroom You have been asked to assist the task force by analyzing violent situations that have occurred in classrooms.  You will explore specific places on the Internet and learn more about classroom violence and how it interferes with learning. After watching the movie "Lean on Me", you will draw your own conclusions and communicate your findings by developing a graphic organizer. You will share your graphic organizer with the task force of parents, teachers and the Local School Council.(LSC)

The Process

As we begin our project, we need to understand what violence is, how it feels, what it sounds like and how it makes you feel.  Complete Document One to learn more about the answers to these questions.

Ms. Bailey will assign a partner to you.  You will explore the Internet and learn more about school violence.  Before you begin exploring you will need to complete a KWL information chart telling readers what you know about school violence what you want to learn from the Internet.

·        Searcher:  Search the Internet

·        Recorder:  Describe and write what you learn from the online resources.

Using a Spider Web list the incidents that occur at Montefiore School

Using a Venn Diagram you will compare and contrast violent incidents you found on the internet and the incidents that occur here at Montefiore School.

You will now change jobs with your partner. The Searcher will now become the Recorder, writing the information needed in this activity. Identify 3 way violence incidents in your classroom that stopped learning from happening.

·        Identify the causes of these incidents

·        Describe how these incidents hindered learning

·        Develop positive responses to these conflicts that encourage learning

·        Use Document Two to write your responses to these questions.

Once again, change jobs with your partner. Produce a web chart on Kidspiration or Inspiration that shows the outcome of positive responses to conflict and negative responses to conflict.

Watch the movie “Lean on Me.” Think about what happened to the students who decided to turn their lives around and what happen to the others. Record this information on the audio cassette.
