Music A Multicultural Experience - Teacher Page

 
Project Description
 

Music has always been such an integral part of a culture because it reflects the climate and influences that causes both  subtle changes and drastic shifts in a society.

 

Music is created by different ethnic groups and every age group.  The difference in the feelings of each is reflected in the type and kind of music created by each generation.  

 

Working in various cooperative groups, students will assume specific roles and responsibilities as you research historical times periods. Students will develop an understanding of what  was happening during that time period and how the music reflected what was taking place in society. Once students gain an understanding of the time period and the music, they will create a multimedia production.

Essential Question:
How does music reflect culture and changes in society?
 
Specific Questions:

1. What were the major events during your decade?

2. What were the socio-economic factors during your decade?

3. What was the emotional climate during your time period?

4. What type of music was found during specific time periods?

5. What does the music say about the time period?

Unit Prerequisites

 
  • Students will visit the library/media center and research general and primary documents in order to gain an understanding of American music.

  • Students will listen to a variety of music that represent of the various cultures represented within American society.

  • Students conduct an Internet search in order acquire information to support the unit.

  • Students will work in group to present a power point presentation.

 

 

Performance Tasks

Access:

  • Examine resources available in the library/media center

  • Investigate historical example of music via. CD, LPs records, videos

  • Interview individuals to gain first hand knowledge of music culture

 

Interpret:

  • Analyze information acquired through research

  • Determine the significant of the integration of various to American music history

 

Produce:

  • Design a power point presentation detailing the impact of music on American culture

  • Create a CD on a particular music genre 

  • Write an original  musical piece representing a time period or genre                   

 

Communicate:

  • Perform a musical piece original or historical.                

  • Explain a particular music as it relates to its historical content

         

 

Evaluate:

  • Critique historical and cultural information gained from project.

  • Evaluate information gained from study.
