Mission Possible - Teacher Page

 
Project Description
 
Students will be divided into groups containing eight students.  Each student will take on the role of a member of the United States Central Intelligence Agency and each student will answer one of eight questions.  The mission is to brief the United States President, his advisors, and the American military on the information needed to prevail in the current war against Afghanistan.  This will involve producing intelligence about Afghanistan regarding the geography, religion, politics, history and culture of the region.  In addition, the president and his team will also need information about strategic countries surrounding Afghanistan.  Once the information is collected and evaluated, the CIA members will publish it, along with their conclusions and recommendations, in a top-secret military manual that will be shared with the president and his team at a strategic planning meeting.

What is the solution to the current crisis between the United States and Afghanistan?
 
Specific Questions:

1. What countries compose the Middle East?

2. What are the geographical characteristics of Afghanistan?

3. What religion(s) are practiced in Afghanistan? 

4. What type of government is currently operating in Afghanistan?  How did this government come to power?  What are its goals?  How does it operate?  Does it have the support of the people?

5. What have been the major historical events of Afghanistan?  What were the effects of World War I on the Middle East?  What were the effects of World War II on the Middle East?  What were the effects of the Cold War on the Middle East?

6. What has been the relationship between the United States and the countries of the Middle East during the past 20 years?  10 years?  5 years?

7. What are the cultural characteristics and values present in Afghanistan?  How do these characteristics compare to the cultural characteristics and values of mainstream America?

8. Which countries will play a critical role in the war between the U.S. and Afghanistan?  Why?  How?

  • Choose an area/question you wish to research.

  • Locate sources to address your question (technological, traditional, primary and secondary)
  • Read sources and gather information in the form of note cards.
  • Conduct two interviews and gather information in the form of note cards.
Interpret
  • Categorize your note cards and combine information when necessary.
  •  Analyze/interpret the information in your note cards.
  • Prioritize the information in your note cards.
Produce
  • Write a summary of the information you collected on your note cards following the “CIA Briefing Template” provided to you.
  • Create recommendations to the president on how to win the war in Afghanistan.  Publish these recommendations on your “CIA Briefing Template.”
  • Design a visual depiction of your information and attach it to your template (i.e. map, chart, graph, drawing, etc.).  Make an overhead of your visual to be used during your presentation to the president.
Communicate
  • Publish your “CIA Briefing Template” in the manual to be presented to the president.  Work with your group members to design this manual.  It should consist of a binder with a creative cover page, a table of contents and eight briefing templates with attached visuals.  Remember that this is a professional assignment and it should be carefully revised and edited.
  • Verbally articulate your information to the president during the intelligence briefing to be held on November 21, 2001.
Evaluate
  • Self-evaluate your written product using a rubric.
  • Evaluate your contributions to your cooperative learning community.
  • Peer-evaluate another group’s presentation.
