The Mission

The Union Planters Bank has asked our class to help them teach other second grade students about money. You will work in cooperative groups of four.  Each group will have a special assignment.  Working together in assigned groups, you will design, create, and run a class toy store. You will shop online at Toys R Us; and you will design a poster about money that Union Planters Bank can share with other students.

The Process

You will work in cooperative groups of four where you will have a special assignment.  Miss Miguel will assign you to your group. Miss Miguel will give each student $10 that they will use for shopping in the class toy store. Each group will also receive $50 to start their business. You will need that money for the cash register.

Step 1

Go online to the Toys’ R Us Web site.

Explore the different toys that are for sale.

Decide what toys you would like to buy and think about what toys would sell in our class toy store.

Make a list of the toys and decide on their price.

Step 2

Draw pictures of the toys you will sell in our class toy store.

Make price tags for the toys for sale.

Step 3

Practice counting money. Go to Cinderella’s Stepmothers Web site and practice counting money.

Play the Money Match Game.

Step 4

Set up your group’s section of the class toy store. Remember to make it look exciting and attractive so that other students want to shop in your store. Decide on the jobs that each person will have in the store.

Cashier – collects money and gives change.

Stock Clerk – refills the shelves as merchandise is sold.

Advertising Executive – designs ads and signs to advertise the store.

Manager – supervises the store and handles problems.

Step 5

Open your store for business. Be sure to follow the responsibilities. When your store closes, count the money and see if you have more money than when you started. Extra money will be your earnings or profit. The profit will be divided equally among the group members.

Decide if your business made a profit.

Step 6

Work as a group to design and create a poster for Union Planters Bank. Decide what you want the poster to look like. It must be about money and can include the business that you have created, the products you sold, and the profit you made.
