The Mission

You are asked by the Miami Museum of Science to assist them in the designing of an exhibit of animal habitats throughout the world.  For this activity, you will work in cooperative groups where each group will be assigned to a particular task. All teams will investigate  different habitats focusing on the survival of its animals. Research will be conducted on the Internet and in books. Everyone will participate in sharing ideas that will help the design look as real as possible.

The Process

You will work in cooperative groups to research, study, and create habitat exhibits for the Museum of Science.  Ms. Matos will assign you to a group and give you a task card which tells you which habitat you will research and create.  You will have a specific role in your group:

Researchers – Use books and the Internet to learn about the group’s habitat

Writers and Editors – Summarize the information that the researchers have gathered and write a news story about the habitat

Artists and Designers – Design the posters and the construct the exhibit

Forest Rangers Reporters – Present the news story and the exhibit to the school audience

 Step I

Researchers – You will go to the library and find books about your habitat.  You will also research the online resources to gather additional accurate information about your habitat. Use the spider map or KWL to compile your information.

Writers and Editors- You will read all the information already gathered by the researchers.  Summarize the information and write a news article for the Matos Habitat News Bulletin. Use the Word document to write your news article. As writers and editors, remember that you are also in charge of reviewing the grammar and spelling of your news article.

Artist and Designers- You will plan and create a design exhibit representing your habitat. Use all the information that the researchers gather and rely on the news article that the writers and editors wrote.  Select the different materials that you are going to use to create your display. Keep in mind that you should be realistic and use facts gathered by members of your team.

Forest Ranger Reporters – You will present the exhibit to the school audience. Using the information gathered by the researchers and the article written by the writers and editors, you will a develop a script about what you plan on presenting.
