FAIRYTALES: Twice Upon a Time - Student Page

The Mission

A bookworm has gotten into the school library and has eaten away the most important parts of all the fairytales.  All the endings are missing.  Luckily, we have been reading and talking about different versions of these fairytales.

You need to become a fairytale author so that the library books can be rewritten. However, let’s see what you would do if you were the main character in the story.  How would you act? What would you do? What choices or decisions would you make if you were faced with the same problems that the main character had?

Our job is to review each story and to decide what problem(s) the main character had to deal with.  We need to think about what the main character did and what happened because of that decision. Then we need to decide what we would have done instead and what would happen because of our decision. We do not all have to agree on what the best choice would be. After we have talked about some of the possible choices, you will choose one story and write your own version of that fairytale so that the library will once again have books to read.

The Process

In order to be prepared to share your project with the class and at our Story Telling to Parents Night, you will have to complete the following steps.

Reread each of the six fairytales and decide which fairytale you are going to retell. You can read the fairytale from the book copies we have in the class or you can go on the Internet and read/listen to each story.   Here are your choices:

Cinderella

Little Red Riding Hood Readable Little Red Riding Hood

Snow White

Jack and the Beanstalk Readable Jack and the Beanstalk

Three Little Pigs

Goldilocks and the Three Bears

       The Gingerbread Man

After you have decided which fairytale you are going to retell, think about who the main character is.  Write down the main character’s name.

                                                           _____________________________________________

Think about the problems that the main character had to face.  Write down at least one, but not more than three problems.

___________________________________________________________________________

___________________________________________________________________________

___________________________________________________________________________

Think about what the main character did to solve the problem or to get out of trouble.  Write the answer here:

___________________________________________________________________________

___________________________________________________________________________

___________________________________________________________________________

Think about how the main character’s choice determined the ending to the story.  Write the answer here:

___________________________________________________________________________

___________________________________________________________________________

___________________________________________________________________________

Think about what you would do differently if you were the main character and how your choice of action would change the ending of the story.  Write your answer here.

____________________________________________________________________________

____________________________________________________________________________

Now you are ready to rewrite your fairytale.  Use ALL the answers that you wrote down on theses pages to help you write your own fairytale.

Once you have rewritten your fairytale with the new ending, you may draw at least one, but not more than three different pictures to illustrate your new fairytale.

Now make a cover page for your new fairytale.  Remember to make a title page with your name as author and illustrator.  Ask an adult or an older student to help you bind your pages into a book.  Practice telling your rewritten story and showing your book so that you will be ready to present it for Parent Story Night.
