Task:

It has come to our attention that Moos Elementary School is in need of a new computer lab.  Due to too few computers and excessive use, the computers have broken down.  As luck would have it, The Invention Convention Committee has contacted our school with news of an upcoming contest.  The winning prize would enable our school to update our computer lab with state of the art equipment.  Also, the winning team will receive a lap top computer with free internet access for one year.

Your task as a group will be to create an invention.  You are to develop a unique original product that can be used to enhance people’s daily lives.  Your group will research different inventors and their inventions.

The Invention Convention Committee will be coming to Moos School to judge your entries.  Entries will be judged on the following:

1.    Originality

2.    Usefulness

3.    Practicality

4.    Cost efficiency

Process:

1.     You will be divided into groups of four different specialists.  Each specialist will be given a role according to his or her credentials.

Roles:

Research Specialist – will focus on inventors from the past and how his or her inventions contributed to everyday living.

Invention Critic – will review research, present findings, and make recommendations to the group.

Artistic Director – will design and create a working model of new invention.

Recorder – will document all necessary data relating to invention.

2.     Each group will research different inventors to determine how his or her inventions enhanced people’s daily lives.

3.     As a group, you will brainstorm to design your own unique invention.  Once designed, you are to create a working model of your invention.

4.    We will have a class discussion about what is expected from each member of the group.  You will receive an individual and group grade on this project.  Remember that you need to work as a team!
