"Shake, Rattle and Quake"

 Teacher Page

Project Description

One of the most frightening and destructive phenomena of nature is a severe earthquake and its terrible aftereffects.  An earthquake is a sudden movement of the earth, caused by the abrupt release of strain that has accumulated over a long time.   If the earthquake occurs in a populated area, it may cause many deaths and injuries and extensive property damage.  Students will understand the unpredictable and uncontrollable effects of earthquakes to life and property.  This will enhance the student's ability to examine what is needed to prepare for, protect against and survive an earthquake.  Students will conduct research through the use of multiple online and print resources to create a newsletter that includes graphs/charts, stories, and an earthquake survival plan. The students will present their findings to the community in the “Scammon Shake, Rattle and Quake” newsletter that .will be distributed during a public service infomercial newscast.

Access:

·        Read about natural disasters

·        Research earthquakes

·        Gather atmospheric and geological facts as they pertain to each region of the United States

·        Examine facts and maps about these regions

·        Investigate survival techniques used during earthquakes

·        Interview individuals that are responsible for emergency rescue operations and communication operations

Interpret:

·        Analyze information that was gathered about natural disasters

·        Categorize the severity of earthquakes based on the Richter Scale

·        Compare geological facts as they pertain to earthquakes in each region of the U.S.

·        Interpret factual data and maps

·        Evaluate survival techniques used in emergencies

·        Organize information from interviews

·        Prioritize emergency information

Produce:

·        Generate charts or graphs that formulate emergency information

Communicate:

·        Explain and elaborate all the necessary information that has been collected on earthquakes and earthquake survival

·        Present information obtained in the format of a news broadcast and a brochure

Evaluate:

·        Check information gathered to see that all criteria for the project has been met
