Students at Curtis Elementary School had a variety of interesting and education projects created by their teachers.
Third grade students worked on a project based on the communities of Chicago. Students learning about communities throughout the United States, developing an understanding of the complexity of neighborhoods and focusing on the communities throughout Chicago.
Sixth grade students developed a web portal for Americans about diseases: The students created a student-centered learning environment in which various instructional strategies, such as peer tutoring, cooperative learning and direct instruction will be used. This project had a strong focus on teaching students to use higher-order thinking skills and research. Students learned to investigate problems, formulate and propose solutions that were supported by evidence as they research potential invasion by viruses to their community. Upon completion of research the students utilized and demonstrated their ability and knowledge of Chicago Academic Standards for the sixth grade level in the form of a Web site and newsletter to inform the Roseland neighborhood and the surrounding Chicago communities of the threat and spread of life-threatening viruses.
The seventh and eighth grade students studied the various eras of music history in America, examining how music has reflected political, social and economic changes/trends in 20th century America. Multiple learning strategies, including cooperative learning, direct instruction, independent study, and research were used to discover trends in American culture. Students developed Power Point presentations to communicate the results of their research.
